83 points and a green trailer

Bam grew up in a single-wide in Pinetown, North Carolina, with a mother who walked to work. In March he dropped 83, the second-most points in NBA history.

March 10, 2026, Heat against Wizards in Miami. After one quarter, Bam Adebayo has 31. This is the big man known for defense, for passing, for doing everything but scoring big. His career high is 41.

At halftime he has 43, already the most he has ever scored in a game. After three quarters, 62.

He finishes with 83. Only Wilt Chamberlain, with 100, has ever scored more in an NBA game. Kobe Bryant's 81 is now third on the list.

To understand why that night hit the way it did, you have to go back to a green trailer in North Carolina.

Pinetown

Every morning in Pinetown, Marilyn Blount got up at 5:45 and cooked her son a hot breakfast while he slept. After he left for school, she walked to work. She was a cashier at a meat market called Acre Station, and she took home about $12,000 a year. Home was a single-wide green trailer. It was just the two of them.

She had moved them there from Newark, New Jersey, when he was seven, back to the part of North Carolina where she grew up. He was already enormous. At one year old, watching The Flintstones, he flipped over a coffee table, and his mom started calling him Bam Bam. By 13 he was six-foot-six.

He knew exactly who had carried them. And he knew what he wanted to do about it.

"My whole devotion became to get my mom out of that trailer."

He did not realize how little they had, he has said, because she made sure he never felt it. She made sure he went to school every day.

The ball took him to Kentucky. When he left, he made a photo of her trailer the background on his phone.

The Miami Heat drafted him in 2017. He became an All-Star. He won Olympic gold twice.

In 2020, for her 56th birthday, he bought his mother a house. Inside the front door hangs a framed photo of the green trailer. And when her birthday falls during a road trip, he flies her out to join the team.

Second only to Wilt

So when the 83 came, it came from somewhere. Look at how he got there: 31 in the first, 12 in the second, then 19 and 21 the rest of the way.

He went to the line 43 times and made 36. Both are NBA records. Some critics pointed to all those free throws. Nobody could argue with the number.

Afterward he talked about Kobe, one of his heroes. He said he wished he could have asked him what he thought. His guess was that Kobe would probably tell him to do it again.

For the mothers

He built a foundation around the life he lived. It is called Bam, Books and Brotherhood, and its mission is to change the lives of single mothers and their children. It hands out school supplies and uniforms, thousands of toys at the holidays, and Thanksgiving meals.

In 2023 it gave a renovated basketball court and a fitness center to the Chapman Partnership's homeless assistance center in Homestead, south of Miami.

Asked once what his mother did for him, he did not make a speech of it.

"She fought for us. She made it happen. She made it work."
