October 18, 2026, Las Vegas. Josh Allen throws a 12-yard touchdown to Keon Coleman, and if you are from Buffalo you already know what that one meant. It was his 258th touchdown pass, counting playoffs. That ties Jim Kelly for the franchise record. The Bills held on, 33-30, and went into the bye at 5-1.
Now rewind ten years. That same quarterback could not get a college coach to write him back.
The email was the same every time. "Hello coach, my name is Josh Allen and I am a quarterback at Reedley JC out of California." Then his size, his grades, a link to his highlight tape, and a line about why he would fit that coach's offense. He sent it to more than 1,000 college coaches, from Alabama to Washington. Two programs wrote back: Eastern Michigan and Wyoming.
That story ends with an MVP trophy. It starts on a cotton farm.
Bloom where you're planted
Allen grew up on a 3,000-acre cotton farm near Firebaugh, a farm town about 40 miles west of Fresno. His grandfather started the farm in 1975. His great-grandfather, a Swedish immigrant, had settled in the area during the Great Depression. The family has a saying: you bloom where you're planted.
At Firebaugh High School he played three sports. That meant no summer quarterback camp circuit, and the camp circuit is where most kids get seen. He graduated in 2014 with zero scholarship offers. Not even a preferred walk-on spot. A few Division III schools offered academic scholarships. He turned them down, because he did not want his parents paying.
Then there was Fresno State, the big program right down the road. The Bulldogs sent an assistant to meet him, then went and got an out-of-state quarterback instead. His dad, Joel, never forgot it.
"You try so hard to get your son to be noticed and he gets rejected over and over."
Joel Allen, to Yahoo Sports, 2017
JUCO
So he went JUCO. Reedley College, less than 40 miles from home. In 2014 he threw 26 touchdown passes and ran for 10 more. Reedley's offensive coordinator said the kid was putting up ungodly numbers and getting no love.
That is when the emails started. No tailoring, no personal touch. He found every coach's address he could and sent the same note. He still tells it the same way.
"I literally just went copy, paste, copy, paste and sent it to every single coach I could find an email for."
Josh Allen, on Bussin' With The Boys, as reported by Sports Illustrated, September 2026
More than a thousand emails. Two answers. That was the whole market for a future NFL MVP.
The kitchen table
Wyoming's staff came out to California to see him for themselves. In December 2014, head coach Craig Bohl sat down at the Allens' kitchen table and offered a scholarship. He was the only FBS head coach to make the trip to the farm.
Allen still made one last call to Fresno State. The Bulldogs still would not promise him a scholarship. So he signed with Wyoming, and Eastern Michigan pulled its offer.
Laramie did not start easy. His first college start, in 2015, ended with a broken collarbone. In 2016 he came back and threw for 3,203 yards and 28 touchdowns. By the next year NFL scouts were making the trip to Laramie, and in April 2018 the Buffalo Bills traded up to take him seventh overall.
The Pokes have never forgotten him. On November 22, 2025, Wyoming retired his No. 17, the first number the school has ever retired. Back home, Firebaugh put his name on its football field.
MVP
Then came 2024. Twenty-eight touchdown passes, 12 more on the ground, and a fifth straight division title for Buffalo.
On February 6, 2025, the JUCO quarterback who got two answers to a thousand emails was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player. It was one of the closest votes ever. Allen got 27 of the 50 first-place votes and edged Lamar Jackson, 383 points to 362.
A month later the Bills locked him up: six years, $330 million, with $250 million guaranteed. At the time, no NFL player had ever been guaranteed more.
Life off the field moved fast too. In May 2025 he married the actress Hailee Steinfeld. In April 2026 they announced the birth of a daughter. The Bills posted a photo of him giving a thumbs up. The caption said: Girl dad.
Denver
The 2025 season hurt. In a December win over Cleveland he broke a bone in his foot, and he kept playing on it.
In the playoffs the Bills won a road game for the first time since 1992. Then they went to Denver and lost 33-30 in overtime. Two days later, Sean McDermott was fired, and offensive coordinator Joe Brady took over as head coach.
Chasing Kelly
This fall, the foot is fine. Which brings you back to Las Vegas: Coleman in the end zone, 258, and Allen's name next to Kelly's at the top of the Bills' list. The next one breaks it. Buffalo comes out of the bye against Baltimore on November 1.
He has never played in a Super Bowl. That is the goal now, the one thing the emails, the kitchen table and the MVP have not gotten him.
And when they asked him about tying Kelly, the kid who once could not get a coach to answer his email kept it short.
GAMECHANGER™"Just doing what I got to do to help this team win a football game."
